Common questions

Buying in the €1,000,000 and above range.

What is the difference between a 'yacht' and a 'superyacht'?
Industry convention: 24 metres LOA is the threshold for MCA commercial coding (Cat 0/1/2) — above 24m a yacht in commercial charter use is classed as a 'large yacht'. 'Superyacht' typically means 30m+, 'megayacht' 50m+, 'gigayacht' 75m+. Below 24m is 'yacht' regardless of price or luxury level.
Should a €2M+ yacht be commercially coded for charter?
Commercial coding (MCA Cat 0/1/2, Italian commercial, RINA) is a worthwhile cost if you plan even partial charter use. Coding cost €50-150k initially plus annual recertification. Tax benefits (input VAT recovery, fuel duty regime) often more than offset the cost over a 5-year horizon. NewSail's charter management service models this for every owner.
What is the typical operating budget at this level?
Rule of thumb: 10-15% of asking price annually for active use. A €3M yacht: €300-450k/year covering crew salaries (3-4 people), berthing (Porto Cervo/Saint-Tropez at peak: €60-150k), insurance (€20-40k), refit reserve (€60-100k), fuel and consumables (€30-80k based on usage). Charter income can offset 30-60% of OPEX for active charter yachts.
Should I buy a 25m Italian yacht or a 35m Dutch yacht for €4M?
Italian 25m (Sanlorenzo 27, Riva 90, Pershing 100): faster (28-35 knots), sportier, more glamorous on Mediterranean docks. Dutch/German 35m (older Feadship, Heesen 35, Amels 32 used): heavier displacement, longer range, more interior volume, better long-range cruising. Italian for show + Mediterranean speed; Dutch/German for substance + range. Both valid, different lifestyle choices.
